How to install Red Hat Linux step by step? — Top Tech Notes
In previous post we installed CentOS linux operating system. In this post we will install Red Hat Linux operating system. Just to let you know, Red Hat Linux installation is exactly the same as CentOS. So we will be keeping it short and to the point because we have already discussed most of the aspects in our previous post when we installed CentOS operating system.
The first thing that we need to do is download Red Hat Linux ISO image. For this navigate to the URL https://developers.redhat.com/products/rhel/download.
On this page scroll down and select the Red Hat Linux version that you want to download and then click on the download button.
It will bring you to the login window where you can login and download the ISO image. If you do not have an account in Red Hat then you can click on Register at the top right corner and then create one here.
I already have account in Red Hat and so I have logged in and I have already downloaded the Red Hat Linux ISO image. I have created a new VM and attached the ISO image to it. This VM will be used in production environment so I will grey out or hide the name of VM to abide by our company security policy. If you are using virtualization software like virtual box then you can attach the ISO image in similar manner in which we discussed while installing CentOS Linux. Process is same in both the cases. It is just the logo and name on ISO image is different.
So once you have mapped the ISO image and start your machine then you will get a screen like the one shown in the picture below.
I will pick the first one which says Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4.
Next I will chose language. I will go with English and then click on Continue. You will find that all the installation steps are similar to CentOS linux installation which we discussed in previous post. The only difference is in operating system logo.
Next we get various installation options which is exactly similar to what we got while installing CentOS Linux operating system. The first option that we have to set is the date and time. So go ahead and select your region to adjust date and time. Then make sure your keyboard and language support options is set as per your preferred choice. If you want to change to a different language, for example if you want a British, English or European or Australian English, you could pick that language. For me default installation source is automatically selected as local media which is actually the Red Hat Linux ISO image that I attached. And I am not going to install GUI or any additional package for this Red Hat Linux system. I will keep it to minimum install so that the installation is very simple.
Next is the installation destination where we need to select how we want to partition our system. I will leave it to default which is automatically configure partitioning in the 8 GB disk that I selected. I will go ahead and click on done.
Next option is KDUMP which is already enabled. Then we can click on Network and host name to assign a host name and enable network just like we did earlier while installing CentOS Linux. The steps are exactly identical.
And now I will click on Begin Installation to start Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system installation.
The setup then brings us to the next screen where it asks us to setup root password and create a user. Just make sure to keep a strong root password. And it will also start preparation for installing packages. You can see it in the progress bar at the bottom.
Once the setup starts installing packages it may take anywhere from five to 10 minutes or more depending on your computer speed. Once the installation is complete it will show us a screen where it will ask us to reboot. Go ahead and click on Reboot to reboot the system.
Once the reboot is completed it gives us a login screen like the one shown below. Since this is going to be live production box so we have grayed out the host name to abide by company security policy. Notice here we do not get a GUI this time. This is because we selected minimal option in software selection. In corporate environment you will find most of the production linux machines are installed without GUI in order to reduce on unwanted resource utilization.
